CHARACTER: CANON SECTION
NAME: Basch fon Ronsenburg
AGE: 36
CANON: Final Fantasy XII

CANON HISTORY:
Basch's wiki entry.
CANON PERSONALITY:
Basch fon Ronsenburg acts calm, level-headed, steady, and determined. He tends to be content with keeping his peace when he doesn't think he has something of importance to contribute, but is also not afraid to speak up when he feels strongly about something, whether or not his opinion has been requested. He's reliable and will do his best, no matter how bad a shape he may be in, himself, for those he has committed to protecting. He was Captain of the Knights of the Dalmasca, before the fall, and even when severely doubted, he's recognized as a force to be reckoned with - he's not given resources, to do what he is trying to do, but neither is he hindered.

Beneath that strength, however, Basch has been shattered in at least two ways. First, when he was seventeen and his country fell, and he probably did not know what happened to his family; and again when he got to see his twin kill Basch's king and spent two years in isolation, in chains, stewing over his failures and not knowing what the world is like. The last of those especially is not exactly the thing that anyone can just move on from, but he hits the ground running. Whatever his mental state after the isolation and pain, he shoves that back in favor of trying to fix what was broken in his guise, because that's more important than what feels, anyway, isn't it?

He is absolutely finding fault with himself over both nations falling under his watch. There are glimpses in what he tells Vaan and later Noah that show just how low his self-worth has reached, such as welcoming Noah's punishment for his mistakes, or not expecting Vaan's trust in him. He claims to shame not having a meaning to him, because of what he has done and failed to stop, and he will put what needs to be done over his own state. This tendency to self-sacrifice is another flaw of his - while within reason it is a useful trait, it clouds his judgment in a different way, very opposite to selfishness but no less damaging.

Basch very much keeps that vulnerability, as well as all his personal pain (he grieves many people; game events - including failing to save Rasler as well as eventually losing Vossler, whom he valued very much, and his twin again - only add to that), locked very firmly away. They only show through in a very few instances, as well as in his kindness to people who are suffering themselves. For the most part, his decisions are swift and his actions confident. He is a person who will protect his royal and do the best for the country he believes in, one who can be relied on, and that is all that most people need to know.

He is also relatively flexible. His loyalty to Ashe is unquestionable, but at the end of the main game we see him taking up his brother's position as Judge Magister under Larsa, and it is highly likely that he performs those duties admirably, as well. He will adjust the situations as they come, and do what seems to be best for those who matter to him.

For all the losses that Basch takes, the events of the game in particular are also good to him. At his very release from the cage at Nalbina, Balthier's words to him are what's done is done, and they help very much. There is also finding friendship in the group that travels with Vaan, up to and including it being acceptable for Penelo to tease him. He succeeds in protecting his Queen until she can reclaim her throne, to bring a better time for Ivalice, which would mean others will not suffer as he those he cares for did, hopefully. He is slowly moving on the path of recovery, with people whom he can trust and who each have their own wisdom capable of supporting him. He is relearning to hope.

SKILLS/ABILITIES:
  • With FFXII using a licensing system, Basch is capable of learning any skill/profession/magick available. The selection of jobs is as follows:
    - White Mage (Aries) - Focused on rods and White Magick
    - Uhlan (Taurus) - Warriors who use spears to pierce enemy armor
    - Machinist (Gemini) - Focused on guns and measures
    - Red Battlemage (Cancer) - focused on maces and various magick types, including exclusively available to them Arcane Magick
    - Knight (Leo) - focused on swords and greatswords
    - Monk (Virgo) - focused on poles and barehanded combat
    - Time Battlemage (Libra) - focused on crossbows and Time Magicks
    - Foebreaker (Scorpio) - focused on axes, hammers, and hand bombs
    - Archer (Sagittarius) - focused on bows and techniques
    - Black Mage (Capricorn) - focused on staves and Black Magick
    - Bushi (Aquarius) - swordmasters who devote themselves body and soul to their lords; focused no katanas
    - Shikari (Pisces) - Warriors who fight nimbly across hill and dale., focused on daggers and ninja swords
    - Basch's particular stats favor high HP (highest in the game) and damage (tied with Vaan as highest), and are lower on speed and magical ability (not abysmally so, but lower than the leaders in those areas).

  • Licensing options aside, what we see of Basch is that he is a highly trained knight, with skills in sword and bow, as well as unarmed, fighting. Tank and DPS in one. He is shown as having high stamina/endurance, considering that he was released from the chains at Nalbina and went on to keep up with Vaan, Balthier, and Fran, and fight alongside them, with barely any rest.

  • Considering that he was Captain of the Knights, he probably had extensive training and practice in strategy and tactics.

  • The name for the limit break system in FFXII is quickenings. They are abilities that take time in battle/actions/damage to charge up, and deal more powerful damage. Basch's quickenings are Fulminating Darkness (lowest level), Ruin Impendent (medium level), and Flame Purge (highest level).

  • Espers are high power level entities which are defeated in the course of the game and can be assigned to each of the characters. I'd like to have assigned to hime one esper: Hashmal, bringer of order.

CHARACTER: AU SECTION
AU NAME: Boris (Bart) Radetskiy
AU AGE: 40
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: Not quite as buff, since he's been a piano player and casual ice hockey player, rather than a professional soldier/knight. Still human, blond, and a tiny bit buff, and still has a scar across his left eyebrow.

AU HISTORY:

  • Boris Radetskiy was born in 1978 in Moscow, USSR, in a family that skirted the line between being pampered by the communist authority and being watched too attentively, ready to turn them from being shown as an example to being persecuted. Boris and his twin brother were inseparable, even though their strengths could be different at times.

  • Little Boris showed not insignificant talent for the piano, and it didn't take much to get him to practice enough to become very proficient, as he was prone to applying himself to what he was told to do, anyway. To the point where the ten-year-old boy was allowed a series of concerts in the USA. On arrangement from his mother, the boy was secreted away and never returned to the USSR.

  • The Berlin Wall fell less than two years later, but when Boris - now known as Bart - tried to call home, but there was no answer. By the time he was old enough to travel to Moscow to look for them himself, there was no trace that he could find of where they may have gone. He lost contact with them when he left them behind, even if it was not his choice entirely.

  • Little Bart was adopted by a well-meaning but nondescript family in New England, chosen by the people who helped him get away from his schedule because they were nondescript. They cared for their new son, but did not understand him. For the most part, Bart was all right with that; the times when he wasn't, he pretended he was, anyway. It was not their fault, and there was nothing to be done. He applied himself to the music, and picked up a sport or three, because that was expected of somebody in a decent physical condition in school. In the end, he took well to ice hockey and went more serious about that.

  • Bart got through a musical higher education, financed by hockey scholarship, in NYC. In his last semester, a mishap resulted with him getting a concussion, a scar, and giving up the hockey, for various reasons. He had to take a break from the piano, as well, but he was very determined to get back into it, so he did. At some point later he came across an older musician (Elliot's mother - with permission here) who helped menor him through returning to the full range of his abilities and back to actively performing.

  • Bart drifted away from his adoptive family at some point after college. He still sends them (and receives) presents and cards for birthdays and holidays, sent well in advance. They are alive and well but, other than memories they share, they don't have much to talk about. He cares about them all the same, and if he learns they need something, he'd do his best to help them out.

  • He moved to Recolle sometime in early 2016, settling down in a decent apartment. He is an active performer and sometime teacher, though he is not very active on the social scene of the arts. Growing up as a bit of an outsider / foreigner / stranger, the one who was missing a childhood of memories that everyone around him shared left its scars.

AU PERSONALITY:

While in external ways, Bart's personality isn't that different from Basch's - he is steady, competent, and quiet unless he has a strong opinion on a subject - the underlying trauma is much less. The heartbreak from being separated and not knowing about his family is ever-present, but it is an old hat, a condition that he has had a very long time to get used to. He is a lot more balanced and his calm goes down deep. He also finds a lot of what is important to him in the music, so he can peace out or let emotions out through his performance.

What Bart isn't is a soldier. He is disciplined and fit, between the music and having played sports, he is a good team player, but he is not trained for emergency or stressful situations, and other than the excitement of spiriting him away from his tour schedule when he was ten, his life has been rather safe. As a result, he is rather more likely to react in unpredictable ways to the strangeness that the app will bring. (Though, as he is far less broken, he's unlikely to become paralyzed with fear or have something traumatic triggered, so there is that.)
