VOLUNTEER PROFILE

Name: Basch fon Ronsenburg
Age: 37
Physical Appearance: Not very tall and blond though at his canon point, he looks more like this.
Point in Timeline: Reading Penelo's letter to Larsa.
World Description: Ivalice.
History/Background: Basch's wiki.

Noteworthy Positive Characteristics:
Loyalty is one of Basch's defining traits. It is both unshakeable and flexible, attempting to offer protection (or even guidance) where it's most necessary, rather than fixed on one target. Basch is loyal to his new homeland, to his order; to the king of Dalmasca and to its Princess, and to the Princess's fiancé... and to Larsa, after he accepts that responsibility. He doesn't question the need to prioritize one at a certain time, instead trusting that they all work and are needed in the common interest of all. He is willing to put all of himself for the sake of those he has committed to, no matter the cost for him in terms of pain or humiliation. Basch is also loyal to those who have aided him in fulfilling his commitments, where that doesn't go against said commitments, and he will judge less harshly / be saddened rather than angered when they come short of some standard or expectation.

Basch is also reliable, which is somewhat similar to the loyalty, but not quite the same. It is the less formalized loyalty for his friends, where they can rely on him even though there may not be oaths sworn among them. This is both in terms of combat and in terms of having someone to listen, or a shoulder to lean on when strength comes short - and even helping defuse tense situations. An example would be when Ashe asks to be kidnapped by Balthier. Basch practically teases the pirate (and is teased back, even if there are barbs in the exchange as they are still all trying to get used to one another, and Balthier is still irritated at him about an earlier transgression for the sake of efficiency), then offers to come with. Is that the lawful good kind of action? No. Will it allow him to be the most useful to them? Yes. Especially after Nalbina (arguably after the fall of Landis), Basch doesn't try to hold himself above reproach relative to the law - he holds himself up to his own standards, and not letting people down (again) is amongst the foundation of those.

For all that Basch puts himself in a support position, he is very much willing to put his opinion forward when he sees those he is loyal to are about to make a mistake. Ths is most emphatic after the party rejoins Ashe at the end of her conversation with the Occuria, where he gives his advice swiftly and firmly. It's partly bound to the fact that, for all that he's not the one developing strategies, he is capable of quickly and thoroughly estimating situations and adjusting to new information - and he tries to put those abilities to good use. He will also not abandon people for not immediately listening to him, but he will still make his opinion known.

Noteworthy Negative Characteristics:
Basch is rather self-effacing and self-deprecating. In some ways, that is not necessarily a bad trait - it's useful for a Knight to be invisible unless needed - but Basch takes this to the extremes. He will ignore his own needs for the sake of his duty and the needs of others, and while he has enough strength to keep on going, that can make him fragile in certain ways at unexpected times.

Basch is also deeply damaged by loss, betrayal, and torture to the point where he is willing to die and is living for the sake of other people. He values his life little beyond how useful it can be; the mental and emotional trauma is also a part of him. He can forgive and even move on, but the scars don't go away so easily. (He is just committed to ignoring them, for self-effacing reasons. And also because there's no mental health counseling in ff... I'd say ffxii, but just. In any Final Fantasy, and it's sure needed sometimes.)

Guilt-ridden. This comes up in some of his conversations with Vaan, in the way he takes Ashe's slap without even trying to explain, and in Basch's conversation with Gabranth before their final confrontation. He is aware that what has happened did not happen because he chose it, definitely, but he's aware that it happened in so many places because he failed, and the awareness that he's not good enough to succeed is part of him. After Landis, and Rasler, and Raminas, after failing his brother, too, and learning the depth of the consequences of that too late, the guilt is a constant, indelible part of him. Though he does find ways to function around it (Balthier's 'what's done is done' is probably the best tool he has for that), the guilt gnaws on him constantly. It's less of a problem while he has something to commit to, something to do for others to carry him forward, to carry him into the future, but without such, he's likely to sink.

Powers/Abilities:
  • With FFXII using a licensing system, Basch is capable of learning any skill/profession/magick available. The selection of jobs is as follows:

  • - White Mage (Aries) - Focused on rods and White Magick
    - Uhlan (Taurus) - Warriors who use spears to pierce enemy armor
    - Machinist (Gemini) - Focused on guns and measures
    - Red Battlemage (Cancer) - focused on maces and various magick types, including exclusively available to them Arcane Magick
    - Knight (Leo) - focused on swords and greatswords
    - Monk (Virgo) - focused on poles and barehanded combat
    - Time Battlemage (Libra) - focused on crossbows and Time Magicks
    - Foebreaker (Scorpio) - focused on axes, hammers, and hand bombs
    - Archer (Sagittarius) - focused on bows and techniques
    - Black Mage (Capricorn) - focused on staves and Black Magick
    - Bushi (Aquarius) - swordmasters who devote themselves body and soul to their lords; focused no katanas
    - Shikari (Pisces) - Warriors who fight nimbly across hill and dale, focused on daggers and ninja swords
  • Basch's particular stats favor high HP (highest in the game) and damage (tied with Vaan as highest), and are lower on speed and magical ability (not abysmally so, but lower than the leaders in those areas).
  • Licensing options aside, what we see of Basch is that he is a highly trained knight, with skills in sword and bow, as well as unarmed, fighting. Tank and DPS in one. He is shown as having high stamina/endurance, considering that he was released from the chains at Nalbina and went on to keep up with Vaan, Balthier, and Fran, and fight alongside them, with barely any rest.

  • Considering that he was Captain of the Knights, he probably had extensive training and practice in strategy and tactics.

  • The name for the limit break system in FFXII is quickenings. They are abilities that take time in battle/actions/damage to charge up, and deal more powerful damage. Basch's quickenings are Fulminating Darkness (lowest level), Ruin Impendent (medium level), and Flame Purge (highest level).

Character Fears: Failing those he has sworn to protect and allowing them to get hurt, or worse. Of note: it's happened over and over again and he's kept going.
Personal Item: A bow with a quiver of arrows. (Sorry for the not very high quality cap. Also most of Basch's swords are... kind of bigger than the specified dimensions...)
